Texas HVAC technician career guide
Prepare for technician work under a licensed contractor.
Official sources reviewed October 9, 2026. Requirements can change; check the linked authority before acting.
Choose the credential for the work
Texas distinguishes registered technicians, certified technicians and licensed air conditioning and refrigeration contractors. Technicians work under a licensed contractor’s supervision; technician registration is not authorization to operate an independent contracting business. Start by asking which credential your intended duties require and whether an exemption applies.
Keep refrigerant certification separate
EPA Section 608 certification applies to work on equipment that can release refrigerants. The certification type depends on the equipment. An applicable EPA-approved exam is separate from Texas technician registration. Apprentices have a supervised-work exception; confirm its conditions before doing refrigerant work.
Review record questions before a major investment
TDLR reviews relevant criminal history case by case. Read its disclosure instructions and consider a pre-application Criminal History Evaluation Letter if your history needs review. That process does not guarantee a later license. A school’s admission policy, an employer’s screening and your supervision conditions remain separate questions.
Compare training and the actual job
Ask each program about the credential it prepares you for, lab and field experience, schedule, total cost, tools, included exams and current openings. Ask an employer about supervision, travel between job sites, driving duties and record policy. Confirm funding directly with the program or responsible workforce organization.
Questions to take to a program or employer
- Which Texas registration or certification do I need for these duties?
- Does the course include the right EPA exam for the equipment I will service?
- What are the total costs, work schedule and supervised-work arrangements?
- Who can confirm admission, record policy and any work or travel restrictions before I commit?
